Texas anglers are fortunate to have a host of striper fishing lakes across the state. The Brazos River yielded the Texas state record striped bass. While stripers are native to salt water, they naturally migrate into fresh water streams to spawn.

The baby bass are biting like crazy, much to the delight of professional angler and guide Debra Hengst, less than a year after the lake was stocked withlargemouth Florida hybrid fingerlings. The water is so clear that when you hook into one bass, you might see four or five more following it to the boat trying to grab the lure. There was one trip where I know I caught 75 or more.
As the sun began to peak over the horizon, it turned the glass surface we floated on a faint shade of orange. I moved the skiff along the sod bank as grass shrimp and silversides shaped small rings on the water's surface. Those windless summer mornings in my home waters were always spectacular and the anticipation of hooking into a big striper certainly added to the scene's natural beauty.
At over 25 miles long, Lake Amistad has miles of shoreline and some great scenery and archeaological sites to explore. Amistad is surrounded by a landscape rich in prehistoric rock art, a vibrant border culture, along with a wide variety of plant and animal life. Amistad was created as a joint project between the United States and Mexico - the middle of the lake is actually the border between Mexico and the US. Lake Amistad is known for it's excellent year round water-based recreation including fishing, swimming, scuba diving, and kayaking.
