WHEN she was a philosophy student at Harvard College eight years ago, Liane Young never thought twice about all the interracial couples who flitted across campus, arm and arm, hand in hand. Most of her Asian friends had white boyfriends or girlfriends. In her social circles, it was simply the way of the world.
Advertised as the first Asian-American romantic comedy, the film is subtle and crass at the same time. Jason Kim, played by Brian Tee, has had his life planned for him since his first birthday. Traditionally, Korean infants are set before a handful of symbolic items money, a paintbrush, a bowl of rice, etc.
To honor two cultures in a wedding can be difficult and stressful. After the ceremony at The University of Florida, Veronica and Matthew had their second ceremony to get to. Instead of rushing on to the next ceremony, the two love birds decided to break away and stop on their first newly weds date to grab some ice cream!
After that initial encounter, it took Thomas three years to ask Susan out on a date, and by then she had transferred to Temple University—a thirty-minute drive away. Despite the distance, the two found a way to make it work. Four years later, Thomas planned on popping the question when the couple took their annual trip down to Myrtle Beach.
