Born 6th April, Chicago, United States. This they accomplished with the help of earlier research by Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins. One of two children, Watson shared a passion for bird watching with his father, who was a tax-collector.
Inhe co-authored with James Watson the academic paper proposing the double helix structure of the DNA molecule. Together with Watson and Maurice Wilkinshe was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nucleic acids and its significance for information transfer in living material". Crick was an important theoretical molecular biologist and played a crucial role in research related to revealing the helical structure of DNA.
J ames Dewey Watson was born in Chicago, Ill. Watson, a businessman, and Jean Mitchell. He then received a tuition scholarship to the University of Chicago, and in the summer of entered their experimental four-year college.
Along with Sydney Brenner and others, he demonstrated that the genetic code is composed of three base codons for reading the genetic material. He was the eldest of two children. He had a natural inquisitiveness for the sciences and enjoyed conducting chemical experiments under the tutelage of one of his uncles.
Watson was anything but happy, however. Indeed, according to most people at the event, he looked completely shattered. The scientist who, with Francis Crick, had discovered the structure of DNA and revolutionised modern biology, and who is revered as one of the greatest scientists of his day, was shaking badly.
Robert Maynard Hutchins once famously remarked that whenever he felt the urge to exercise, he immediately lay down. Despite the hyperbole for he, like Jim Watson, was an ardent tennis player he had made the point that his priority resided in one relentless form of exercise, that of the mind. In this, too, Jim Watson is a true follower of Hutchins, as his book and indeed his life demonstrate so engagingly.
Watson enrolled at the University of Chicago when only 15 and graduated in From his virus research at Indiana University Ph. He learned that scientists working in the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge were using photographic patterns made by X-rays that had been shot through protein crystals to study the structure of protein molecules.
Watson received a Nobel Prize and went on to do work in cancer research and mapping the human genome. He later came under fire for several controversial remarks on subjects ranging from obesity to race-based intelligence. Inhe received a Bachelor of Science degree in zoology and then went on to attend Indiana University in Bloomington, where he received his Ph. During his graduate studies, Watson was influenced by the work of geneticists H.
Maurice Hugh Frederick Wilkins CBE FRS 15 December — 5 October was a New Zealand-born British physicist and molecular biologistand Nobel laureate whose research contributed to the scientific understanding of phosphorescenceisotope separationoptical microscopy and X-ray diffractionand to the development of radar. Wilkins' work on DNA falls into two distinct phases. The first was in —50, when his initial studies produced the first clear X-ray images of DNA, which he presented at a conference in Naples in attended by James Watson.
