The organization has evolved from a program primarily based on entertainment and the experiences of American gay white men into an internationally-recognized community organization committed to reflecting and speaking to a broad range of issues across cultures, race, immigration status, class, gender identity and expression, age and region. The festival showcases features and shorts, in addition to mainstream, and avant-garde films. Festival events connect members of the community.

Reporter September 14, Fall is a great time to be in Austin with the advent of film festival fever that will soon overtake the city. It will take place at both the Alamo Drafthouse and the Paramount Theatre over the course of four days beginning Thursday, Sept.

Some of my fav screenings have been their drive-in showing of Queen of the Universe, complete with folks arriving in and showing off their vintage hot rods, and also their block party screening of Hairspray. But these event type screenings are just an appetizer to the annual ten day festival, a festival that has consistently had solid programming of spectrum of films that might not receive distribution or be screened anywhere else.

Today, the short movie series that drew lines outside the doors of Dobie Theater on move-in weekend has come to be known as the Austin Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival — one of the longest-running cinema festivals in the city. Though the first year began with just four films and a handful of shorts, by the fourth year it was in the process of becoming a non-profit with a full-fledged board, and today the festival is made up of a variety of films by an international array of filmmakers.
Party Monster. Ask Dennis Poplin, the founder of San Antonio's gay and lesbian film festival, Out at the Movies, to talk about the issues gay and lesbian film festivals face nationwide and right away he says, "homophobia. In San Antonio, though, the city council, bowing under pressure from religious operatives, entirely de-funded Out at the Movies by refusing to provide the festival with city arts funding or awarding it Texas Commission on the Arts funding.
With subjects ranging from blind teenagers clumsy over love to a gang of "killer lesbians" punished for a crime they didn't commit, aGLIFF presented a variety of viewpoints and perspectives with rapturous full-length features, eye-opening documentaries and silly, sexy and to-the-point shorts. And of course, a gay film festival program wouldn't be complete without a handful of adult gay film stars looking to get their big acting break. Here are some of my personal favorites.
