When Veronica Mars returned as a movie init leaned heavily on fan service. Hell, it even took place during a high school reunion, so basically everyone from the original three seasons had a reason to show up. The best part about the new Hulu revival of the series -- which the streamer surprise-dropped this past Friday, a week ahead of its scheduled release -- is that it largely does away with any of that nostalgia, shedding the "hey look, it's that person" vibes for a mystery that's not reliant on old teenage beef.
Veronica Mars overlord Rob Thomas knows he has a metaphorical target on his back. But I will have made a really bad bet if, en masse, the fans turn on the show. That would certainly be a tough lesson to learn.
Like many of TV's most popular couples of all time, Veronica Mars and Logan Echolls were not originally meant to be together. If showrunner Rob Thomas had stuck with his original plan, Veronica's endgame or at least her primary on-off romantic relationship would have been Duncan Kane, and I think we can all agree that would have been a very, very dark timeline. But Kristen Bell and Jason Dohring's chemistry leapt off the screen early on, and ever since the midpoint of season 1 their intense relationship has been a linchpin for the show.
But go see it! If enough people do, we might get ourselves a sequel, ideally one with a LOT more screen time for Weevil. From the moment Kristen Bell's voice-over confided "People say I'm a marshmallow" — to whoops of delight from the packed opening-night theater — it was clear that Veronica Mars, the film adaptation of the television series, was not here to make friends.

The original series, which ran from to on UPN and The CW, introduced Veronica Kristen Bell as a teenage sleuth who'd already endured more trauma before her 17th birthday — she was raped; her best friend was murdered — than anyone should at any age.
Live in oblivion, secure in the knowledge that our favorite sleuth and her psychotic-jackass-turned-soulmate are somewhere along the Pacific Coast Highway, blissfully cruising along as man and wife. Keith tries to beg out, but Veronica tells her dad to gut it up. This soon becomes the plan.
Their story has always been epic. Read on at your own risk! For three seasons on TV and in the Kickstarter-funded movie, their chemistry was undeniable. But fans of the LoVe relationship have had to endure more heartbreak than happy times, as it usually goes on good TV shows.
