Vintage commenced in Coonawarra in the last week of February with white wine varietals Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Riesling being picked through to late March. The whites are looking fantastic, with great natural acidity and complex flavours. Riesling and Chardonnay being the stand outs.
I rarely look at vintage charts, but occasionally I do find them useful. What I am generally looking for are vintages that were extremely poor in the particular geographic area rated. Although I know there are variations within even small areas witness this year's Loire Valley, where a frost or a hailstorm would hit one village but not the next one overbut some years I find are almost universally bad, and I avoid any wines from the area unless I taste them first.
A later start to picking and a mild period of ripening finished with the last grapes being picked in mid-May. A wet winter gave us a good foundation for our predominantly dry-grown vines on their own roots, and a cool, wet and fiercely windy spring followed, with a slightly higher spring rainfall than the Barossa Valley, which delayed flowering, though conditions during set meant that yields were at average levels. A mild summer with regular rainfall events followed, which allowed the grapes to reach full physiological maturity.

With steady climates in July and August and some warmer days at the end of the season, the Napa vintage is now cellaring, the fifth consecutive year of great quality. As the ratings come in globally, France appears to be one of the leaders in quality. In the Southern Hemisphere, Australian wines seem to be leading the way, with many regions scoring in the 90s according to Wine Spectator.
Vintagein winemakingis the process of picking grapes and creating the finished product—wine see Harvest wine. A vintage wine is one made from grapes that were all, or primarily, grown and harvested in a single specified year. In certain wines, it can denote quality, as in Port winewhere Port houses make and declare vintage Port in their best years. From this tradition, a common, though not strictly correct, usage applies the term to any wine that is perceived to be particularly old or of a particularly high quality.
