But for a gay couple it was an impossible route — even in the few countries which accepted same-sex couples, heterosexuals were prioritised.

The WA AIDS Council has called for condom vending machines to be installed in every WA mining camp amid rising fear about the sexual practices of fly-in fly-out miners. According to The Australian the WA Department of Health is close to releasing draft guidelines on how resources companies can reduce the likelihood of STIs in their workforce. The council said miners were also at risk from partying in countries with a higher prevalence of HIV on their time off.
Qantas announced today it would increase capacity between Perth and the Western Australian regional destinations of Broome and Karratha and introduce B services between Perth and Port Hedland from February Qantas Regional General Manager Western Australia, Mr Ian Gay, said the additional services and capacity increases were part of the airline's ongoing strategy to grow capacity in Western Australia for the resource sector and tourism industry. Mr Gay said that Qantas will add an additional weekly Perth-Broome return service, operating from Perth at 7am on Thursdays, adding seats per week and commencing 26 February In addition, the airline has brought forward the introduction of an additional Perth-Paraburdoo return service on Fridays, which was planned for 27 Februarybut commenced 7 November

Hedland could become the first local council in regional WA and the second in the State to recognise same-sex unions. The Town of Port Hedland is expected to debate whether to develop a relationship declaration program to formally recognise same-sex unions at an upcoming council meeting. The move is the latest show of support for marriage equality after Federal Labor leader Bill Shorten introduced a Bill to legislate same-sex marriage in Parliament this month.

On Wednesday night, the Western Australian town of Port Hedland announced it would endorse a Relationship Declaration Register to formally recognize the relationships of the town's same-sex couples. Seven out of eight council members voted in favor of the move, and they expect around people will eventually join the Register.
The Town of Port Hedland is seeking the community's feedback on its proposal to create a register formally recognising same sex unions in the shire. It would be the first regional Western Australian town to recognise same sex marriage if the Relationship Declaration Program is adopted at the council's meeting in August. Mayor Kelly Howlett says it would not change the legal status of couples, but could be used as legal evidence of the existence of a relationship. The City of Vincent in Perth is the only other WA local government to have taken this step, placing the regional town alongside major capitals like Sydney and Melbourne.
Updated August 27, A council in Western Australia's mining heartland has become the latest local government to recognise same-sex unions. The Town of Port Hedland has endorsed the confidential Relationship Declaration Register policy, which will formally recognise the relationship status of couples in the Pilbara town, irrespective of gender.
