In many ways, the mission and structure of this first group established a strong foundation for the four caucuses that were created subsequently. The caucuses provide a way for city officials to become involved with the larger organization by introducing both elected city officials and staff to the League and colleagues from cities throughout California who share similar challenges and experiences. This networking supports leadership development and offers a forum for sharing information and best practices and connecting with other affiliate groups at the state and national levels. Although most caucus members come from their identified constituencies, membership is open to all individuals interested in caucus priorities.

The first black lesbian conference in the United States took place in San Francisco in Though black lesbian conferences have been organized since then with national agendas, Beyond Bold and Brave is the first one in 30 years to focus on black lesbians in the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut area. In a recent phone interview Ford looked back at this conference, talking about why it was important and what lies ahead.

Martin and Lyon met inbecame lovers inand moved in together on Valentine's Day in an apartment on Castro Street in San Francisco. They had been together for three years when they founded the Daughters of Bilitis DOB in San Francisco inwhich became the first social and political organization for lesbians in the United States. Both women worked to form the Council on Religion and the Homosexual CRH in northern California to persuade ministers to accept homosexuals into churches, and used their influence to decriminalize homosexuality in the late s and early s.
